Introduction

Trauma in the pediatric population remains a leading cause of both morbidity and mortality. It carries substantial physical, economic, and psychosocial costs to children and their caregivers. The initial trauma survey and acute resuscitation share many similarities with the principles used for adult patients; however, there are significant differences in the assessment and management of pediatric trauma. These are due to unique anatomic, physiologic and social characteristics.
