Umbilical Hernia

Introduction

Umbilical hernias are one of the more frequently encountered pediatric surgical conditions. Their management is rarely emergent but they are a significant source of parental anxiety and are often attributed erroneously as the etiology of chronic abdominal complaints. As many as eighty percent of umbilical hernias identified at birth will spontaneously close however their repair remains one of the most commonly performed surgeries in children.
