Ascites describes the accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity. The management of ascites is dictated by the underlying cause. While ascites is often related to hepatic dysfunction, there are other causes that can affect the management of ascites. If ascites is the presenting symptom or is causing clinical instability, fluid removal may be indicated.
