Ascites is the accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity. Although most commonly related to hepatic dysfunction there are other causes and the management of ascites is dictated by the underlying disease. If the ascites is the presenting symptom or causing clinical instability, fluid removal may be indicated.
