The incidence of burns is steadily increasing . It was estimated that burns represented only 2.1% of the global burden of disease before 1998 and this rose to 16% from 2006 to 2013 with nearly half of these burns occurring in the pediatric population . While the incidence has increased so has the survival rate . In the 1990s a 40% total body surface area (TBSA) injury was associated with increased mortality and currently the percentage has risen to 62% TBSA . Since burn debridement or grafting is the fourth most commonly performed pediatric surgical procedure, it is essential that the disease process and treatment are well understood .
